Terra Preta-Weingut Huppert

Where does sustainability begin? With the care of the soil and its inhabitants. After all, we want our children and grandchildren to be able to grow excellent grapes here in the future.

To achieve this, we use Terra Preta, a method that is new to us but ancient to the indigenous peoples of the Amazon. Using organic waste from the region, we produce high-quality black soil that is fermented rather than composted. In doing so, we bind CO² and achieve climate neutrality.

The challenging dry and warm years have given us cause for concern. How can we continue to practice viticulture in the future with rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall? We sought to increase biodiversity, store CO2 (become climate neutral), improve water retention, and prevent nitrate leaching into the groundwater.

By using Terra Preta in combination with diverse cover crops, we enhance the humus content of our soils, naturally and sustainably nourishing our vines. This approach ensures that viticulture will remain possible even in the distant future.
